The internet explosion continues unabated with tens of thousands of "newbies" continuing to join the www community every single day, which is why getting a good search engine ranking is so important. There are literally millions of websites out there in cyberspace. The truth of the matter is that without any sort of marketing, and in the absence of any SEO (search engine optimisation) methodology, no one will know that your site even exists. But you may be wondering just what search engine optimisation is, and what the importance is that is attached to having a good search engine ranking.

The vast majority of people who surf the net, are looking for something, and they use their browsers to find it; browsers such as Google, Yahoo, MSN, and AOL. They search by entering their search criteria into their browser's search window. But have you ever stopped to wonder just what's going on in the "back office"; just what it takes to generate a search engine report page (SERP) and how SEO can influence it? The truth of the matter is that once you understand what goes on, you can begin to influence things. You can take your lowly search engine ranking, (probably zero if you're just beginning), apply SEO techniques, and improve it so that your website will eventually feature on a SERP. In other words you can improve your page ranking in a matter of a few short weeks.

Why should you do that? Well, put simply; the better your search engine ranking is, the higher your website will appear on the search engine reports.
