Dealing With Clogged Drains

by Scott Rodgers

Clogged drains are one of the most common plumbing problems at home. It can be a real mess and a very frustrating situation but everyone has to face it at some point or the other.

Apart from the mess and the inconvenience it causes, clogged drains can affect your health as well. Stagnant water can give rise to mold, mildew, fungus, mosquitoes etc which can be really dangerous for your immune system.

There are many solutions that you can try out yourself for clearing clogs. Like, if the clog is very near to the drain opening, you can remove it by hand. But, if it is deep inside, a bright flashlight and a screwdriver will help to analyze the problem.

Equipments like needles, nose pliers or clothes hanger can help you remove the clog. Also, make sure that your protective screens are clean from hair, soap etc. and you should change them regularly to avoid minor clogs.

If the clog is too far to remove by hand, a good plunger is the next step. Plungers work precisely the way they sound " by pulling clogs free using powerful suction. Add good amount of water to the basin before you start. Try a few hard thrusts and see if the water begins to drain.

If the plunger fails as well, its time to break out the heavy artillery: a plumbers snake. The snake is a steel cable that can be threaded, turned and otherwise manipulated deep into the pipe to get at the clog itself. You may need to remove the overflow plate to get this kind of access to the pipes, but the good news is that you can expect a quick job from there.

Although the snake works nearly all the time, you may find some clogs that resist even the most concerted efforts at manual repair. These are the rare cases where you may need to call a plumbing professional.

Of course the easiest way to deal with clogged drains is to simply avoid them in the first place. Fine screens, water softeners and common sense can often help you greatly reduce the incidence of major clogs. You may even use boiling water, baking soda and vinegar once a month to dissolve soap scum, grease and other tenacious compounds.
